The 21 January announcement of the second Gates Challenge grant to Rotary received extensive media coverage resulting in more than 300 news articles worldwide. As part of a coordinated, global media outreach strategy, Trustee Chair Jonathan Majiyagbe took part in a telepress briefing, which also included Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Adolf Kloke-Lesch of the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. About 70 journalists representing media outlets in North America, Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America participated in the telepress briefing.
The broadcast news coverage was also significant, including the BBC Network and more than 40 TV news stories across the United States. The TV audience in the United States was approximately 2.1 million viewers. The day after the announcement, press outreach was conducted by the National PolioPlus committees in Nigeria and India resulting in national media coverage in both countries.
